Suryan ( The Sun ) – Suriyanar koil History

Sun has its own value among the nine planets. It is a belief that person visits the temple that dedicated to the SUN GOD has good richness in worldly life. Located at the banks of river Cauvery is one of the specialities of the temple. This temple is exactly 2 km to the north of Aduthurai, 15 km to the east of Kumbakonam and roughly 20 km from Mayiladuthurai. All nine planets have separate sanctums (sannadhis) in the temple. This is one of the Highlights. Sri Suryanarayanaswamy, the presiding deity of the temple is found in a lying posture inside the sanctum sanctorum with his consorts Sri Usha Devi and Sri Pratyusha Devi. Kalava Muni became aware of the news that he was to suffer of leprosy, one of the deadliest diseases. In order to free himself, the sage worshipped Navagrahams. The nine planets on being pleased by his devotion, released him out of the terrible disease. Lord Brahma, the creator became angry with the planets for failing in discharging their duty in accordance with the law of Karma with regards to Kalava Muni. As a result, he cursed the planets that they be afflicted by leprosy and banished them to earth. However on their imploring, Lord Brahma advised them to take a dip in the holy river Cauvery and offer prayers to Lord Shiva (Prananadheswarar) and Mother Parvati (Manglanaayaki) at Thirumangalakudi. He also instructed them to take their food on Velerukku leaf. The Navagrahas followed the instructions of Lord Brahma and invoked the blessings of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva pleased with the worship blessed them that they be enshrined in nine separate sanctums in the Suryanar temple. He also decried that whosoever worship the Navagrahas there will be free of their problems.

Chandra ( The Moon ) –Thingaloor

Chandra is a lunar god. True to say that the Moon is lord of plants and vegetation. Chandra is credit with young, energetic, beautiful, 2 armed and having lotus in hands. With the support of ten white horses, he rides his chariot across the sky by every night. He is also called as Rajanipati, meaning lord of the night. Kshupakara, meaning one who illuminates the night. According to the Hindu Astronomy, he presides over Monday. He is married to 27 Nakshatras. Three types of incidents are told as the history. Let see one by one. Lord Vishnu distributed the Amurtham among devas. One of the asuras disguised as deva tasted the Amurtham distributed by the Lord. Suryan and chandran complained this to the Lord when came about this news. Angered and worried, the Lord used the weapon called chakrayudham (Sudharshana Chakra) to cut the asura’s body into two. The head region joined with body of snake and become Raghu Bhagavan. The body portion joined with snake’s head become Kethu bhagavan. Ragu and Kethu bhagavan doesn’t forgive the suryan and chandran. Chandran is started consuming by Ragu. This leads chanran to rely on the Lord Shiva for blessings. Lord Shiva has blessed the chandran to get back the power of growing back after 15 days. So, we can see the waxing and waning of the Chandra (Moon) in the sky. The Lord also blessed the Moon and adorning him in his head. Anyone prays the Moon has belief of regain the power and enjoyment in life. King Dakshan gave all the 27 daughters to chandran in marriage. Among the 27, Chandra’s favourite consort is Rohini. This leads the Chandra to spend more time with the rohini. Other ones made a complaint to their father. King Dakshan got angry and cursed Chandra that the beauty and awesomeness slowly disappears by every day. Chandra is to be relied on Lord Shiva to escape from the curse. Lord Shiva blesses him to regain the awesomeness day by day. This led waxing and waning of Moon. Shiva also adorns the Chandra in his forehead. Apputhi Adigal, follower of Thirunavukarasar, served poor and done many charitable works in the name of his mentor. Adigal asked Thirunavukarasar to have a lunch in his house. Thirunavukarasar accepted the offer and made a visit. On the day of visit, Adigal’s son died. On hearing the death news, adigal simply said ‘Aththi devo bhava’ and continue to serve the mentor by hiding his sorrow. On hearing the truth, Thirunavukarasar went to this Kailasanathar temple with the dead body. He asked the Lord to shower the blessings on the adigal’s son. As a result, adigal’s son came back to the normal life. In the field of Astrology, Chandra Dosham has its impact. It causes concern in wealth, health, mother’s wellbeing and nervous disorders. Angarakan ( Sewai ) - The Mars - Vaitheeswaran Koil Temple

Budan ( The Mercury) – Trivenkadu

Budha is the name for the planet Mercury. He is the son of Chandra (Moon). He is also the god of merchandise. He is represented as being mild and having a greenish complexion. He is represented holding a shield, riding a winged lion. In other illustrations, he holds a sceptre, lotus and rides a carpet or a chariot drawn by lions. Budha presides over Wednesday. He is married to Ila, the daughter of Vaivasvata Manu. Swetharanyeswarar Temple in the town of Thiruvengadu near Sirkazhi is the shrine dedicated to the planet Mercury. The main deity is Swetharanyeswarar, meaning the lord of white forest and the goddess is Brahma Vidya ambal. There is a separate Sannidhi for Bhudhan (mercury). This temple is especially known for its unique incarnation of Lord Shiva called "Agora Murthi". He is one of the main gods being prayed in this village. This temple has 3 pools and 3 Gods. It is believed that those who take bath in all pools, those will be freed from their problems like diseases, delay in marriage, etc. It is said that Agora Murthi is one of the furious incarnation of Lord Shiva. Once an asura named "Maruthuvasuran" lived in Thiruvengadu. He had a deep meditation on Lord Brama. Being satisfied, Lord Brama offered him powers. He used those powers in a wrong ways. He started to torture the saints and people. This led all the saints and people to request Lord Shiva to put an end to this evil (asura). Lord Shiva took his incarnation 'Agora murthi' and killed the 'Maruthuvasuran under a tree (At the back to the entrance of Agora murthi). People thanked Lord Shiva for saving them. Swetharanyeswarar Temple is one of the 6 sacred places on the banks of river Cauvery which is considered as equivalent to the temple at Varanasi. The other 5 shiva sthalams are Thiruvaiyaru. Chaayaavanam. Mayiladuturai. Tiruvidaimarudur. Tiruvanchiyam. From the stone inscriptions found inside this temple, it is seen that the chola kings Aditya Chola and Rajaraja Chola have made huge contributions to this temple. Important tamil saints namely Thirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukkarasar, Sundarar and Manickavasagar have sung holy hymns about the Trivenkadu temple. It is believed that the Lord Shiva performed the six different dance forms here. This place is also called as Adhi Chidambaram. Thiruvenkadu is located near Poompuhar and 10 km from Sirkazhi 24 km east of Mayuram 59 km from Kumbakonam The presiding deity is Swedharanyeshwarar and Brahmavidyanayaki. A unique feature about Swetharanyeswarar Temple is that the image of Lord Shiva has five faces namely Easanam Tatpurusham Aghoram Vamadevam Sadyojatam Nandi bears nine scars on its body and is seated at the entrance of Devi’s shrine. Guru Bhagavan( The Vyazhan) Jupiter – Alangudi Temple

Jupiter is known as Brhaspati, meaning lord of devotion. He is called Deva-guru, meaning guru of the gods. He is personification of religion and piousness. He presides over Thursday. He holds a stick, lotus and beads in hands. The temple devoted to Brahaspati is called Apatsahayesvarar Temple in Alangudi. Since this holy temple dedicated to Guru (Jupiter), it is also called as guru stalam. Apatsahayesvarar Temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. This temple was believed to be constructed by a devoted devotee of Lord Shiva. ‘Amuthokar. He was minister of the King Masukuntha Chakravarti. ‘Amuthokar was believed to be beheaded by the Chakravarti, as he refused to give half of his Punya, (merit) to the King. On his death, the sthalam(temple)reverberated with the sound ‘Amuthokar’. The King gets afraid at this constant diabolic echo, realizes his mistake and worshipped the Lord Abadsahayeswarar with ardent devotion. Then, he was relieved from all Doshas. Thirugnanasambandar has blessed this Sthalam as beautiful place filled with flowers. The Lord of this temple is Swayumbhu (Natural origination of the idiol). The temple exists from ancient times. Gnansambandar has celebrated the Lord in his Thevaram hymns. Apatsahayesvarar Temple is the 98th temple on the southern bank of Cauvery mentioned in Thevaram hymns. Festivals celebrated in this temple are Pancha Paruva Urchavam, Gurupeyarchi (Transgression of Guru Baghavan from one sign of Zodiac to another sign), 1008 Conch Abisheka Festival, ten days Maha Festival during Chitra Pournami and the Guru Baghavan car festival on the tenth day are celebrated grandly. Poolai Shrub is holy tree of this temple. Alangudi is bordered by three holy rivers that are Cauvery, Kolidam and Vennaru. Fifteen theerthams are around Apatsahayesvarar Temple. It is a belief that Chakra theertham was created by Maha Vishnu’s Chakra (Disc). Special abhishek and pujas are performed to the Lord in the month of February and March. Lord Shiva is the presiding idol of the temple and came to known as Abathsahayeswarar. Goddess Parvati is named as Elavarkuzali here. Once upon a time, the Asuras and Devas tried to shake the heavenly ocean famous “Parkadal”. They employed the celestial snake named “Vasuki” as the cord and a mount named “Mandara” as a rod to get hold of the celestial medicine. The snake spat out toxic poison (Ala Visham) which was gulped down by Lord Shiva to protect the world. Therefore, Lord Shiva is affectionately called as “Abathsahayeswarar” which means “rescuer” who devoured the poison and protected the earth. We meet Mother- Ambica Shrine first, followed by the presiding deity and the Guru-Dakshinamurthy by entering the temple. Alangudi is a village in Thiruvarur District of Tamil Nadu. Alangudi is 7 Kms South of Needamangalam Railway station and 17 Kms South of Kumbakonam.

Sukran (Velli ) ( The Venus ) – Kanjanoor

Shukra means brightness and clearness. It is the name for the son of Bhrigu and son of the asuras. He presides over Friday. He is white in complexion. He holds stick, lotus and beads. This is the temple for performing “Kalathira Dosha Pariharam” for Lord Sukiran. Lord Shiva named as Agneeswarar is the presiding deity and Goddess parvathi is named as Karpagambal. Lord Agni one of the “Ashtadhik Balakars” is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva here and hence the name Agneeswarar. Guru is always seen with a demon being crushed under his feet. The demon signifies ignorance. It means that guru leads us from ignorance to the knowledge. Agniswara Swami Temple at Kanjanur is associated with Lord Sukran (Planet Venus). As per the Sthala Purana, Lord Brahma was blessed with a vision of Shiva’s marriage with Parvathy here. The Brahma Lingam enshrined in this Temple is said to have been worshipped by the Lord Brahma himself. It is to note that there is no separate shrine for Lord Sukra since Lord Shiva himself is believed to have incarnated as Venus here. Sani ( The Saturn ) – Thirunallar

Shani is embodied in the planet Saturn. He presides over the Saturday. The word shani also denotes the seventh day or Saturday in most Indian languages. It is to note that Shani is elder brother of Yama, the god of death according to the Hindu mythology. Shani, along with the goddess Jyestha, are associated with the crow in the Hindu mythology. According to Hindu mythology crows represent harmful and inauspicious characteristics, both of which Shani possesses. The Hindu traditions often include the worship of Shani in order to dismiss dangerous ghosts and other supernatural beings. Tirunallar Saniswaran Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Sani(saturn). This is also called as Dharbaranyeswarar Temple since it is believed that presiding deity is made up of dharba grass. This place Tirunallar was historically called Dharbaranyam. Thirunallar is a small town in Karaikal, India. This municipality comes within the Union Territory of Pondicherry. Thirunallar is 300Kms from Chennai and 145Kms from Pondicherry. Thirugnana Sambandar, the 7th century nayanar has celebrated the deity with four hymns. Appar and Sundarar, the other Nayanars have glorified the temple with their hymns. Arunagirinathar, a 15th-century poet and devotee of Lord Muruga has composed hymns on the deity. Tirunallar Saniswaran Temple is also attributed to Murugan worship as well. History says that Nala of the Nishadha country got his deliverance from the evil effects of Shani (Saturn) by invoking the Lord's mercy. Raghu – Thirunageswaram

Rahu is a severed head of an asura swallows the sun causing eclipses according to the Hindu tradition. He is depicted as a serpent with no body riding a chariot drawn by eight black horses. Rahu and Ketu are respectively called the north and the south lunar nodes. During the Samudra manthan, one of the best episodes in the Hindu mythology the asura Rahu drank some of the amrita (divine nectar). The sun (suryan) and moon (chandran) realized it and alerted Mohini (the female avatar of Vishnu). Mohini take off the asura's head before the nectar could pass his throat. The head remained immortal due to the effect of amrita and became Rahu. This immortal head from time to time swallows the sun, causing eclipses. Then, the sun passes through the opening at the neck, ending the eclipse. Lunar eclipse is due to kethu to swallows the moon on timely basis. Kethu – ( Keezhaperupallam )

Kethu represents karmic collections both spirituality and supernatural influences according to In Hindu astrology. Kethu is associated with the Meena Avatar (Fish Incarnation) of Vishnu. Ketu causes material loss in order to force more spiritual outlook in the person. Ketu is indicator of intelligence, non-attachment, fantasy, penetrating insight and psychic abilities. Ketu is believed to bring prosperity to the family. He grants good health and wealth to his devotees. Ketu is the lord of three nakshatras that are Ashvini, Magha and Mula. According to the mythology, an asura’s head was cut off by God Vishnu. This result the asura’s head and body joined with a snake to form 'Ketu' and ‘Ragu’. Ketu represents the body without a head, and Ragu, represents the head without a body. According to the accounts in Hindu mythology, Ketu belongs to Jaimini Gotra and Rahu belongs to Paiteenasa gotra. It is to be understood that both ketu and Ragu are completely different entities with distinct characteristics. Ketu is generally referred to as a "shadow" planet. It is believed that Ketu to have a marvellous impact on human lives. Ketu is often depicted with a gem on his head signifying a mystery light. The Temple dedicated to the Kethu is Kethu Sthalam is in the village of Keezhaperumpallam. This Sthalam is just 2 kilometres away from Poompuhar and comes within the range of Nagapattinam district. The presiding deity is Ketu. But still, the main idol is "Naganatha Swamy" or Shiva. Other name for this sthalam is Naganatha Swamy Temple. Devas and Asuras stirred the ocean of milk with Mount Mantara as the stick and snake Vasuki as the rope. The snake, unable to bear the pain emitted poison. Devas and the demons feared the ill effects of poison and prayed Lord Shiva. The Lord Shiva swallowed the poison but Goddess Parvathi rushed to prevent Him from swallowing .This leads poison to stop in His neck. Due to this, the Lord Shiva is called Neela Kanda and His throat turned blue with the poision. Vasuki, the King of serpents did penance and worshipped Lord Shiva for years. The Lord appeared before the snake. He blessed the snake to be enshrined in a temple in the bamboo forest and relieve the devotees from the ill effects. The 9 Navagraha deities are generally found in small, square enclosure in every temple (Nine Navagraha temples). Natives afflicted by Ketu are stricken with fears of dacoity, loss of property, poisonous bites and putra dosha. One can get rid of the afflictions, by praying Lord Ketu. Ketu is a half-planet that bestows wisdom. Ketu's effects are similar to Mars. Ketu is neither feminine nor masculine. Ketu credits with wind-dominated, animalistic and compulsive in behaviour.

After breakfast, checkout and proceed to visit Thirunanageswaram Temple(Rahu), Alankudi Brahaspathi Temple (Guru), Swamimala Sree Muruga Temple (Arupadai House), Thinkaloor Temple (Chandra), Thanjavur Sri Brahadeeshwara Temple, Evening Darshan at Srirangam Sri Ranganathar ( Lord Vishnu) Temple. After the dinner, we return to Palakkad - Kerala .Reaches by next day early morning (Around 05.00 am)
